Panel 7: The Nazification of Society

Abolishing Democracy has many advantages for the Nazis. They completely control the unions, media, economy, local and national governments and the schools. Anybody who protests can be arrested.

People can only read what the government wants them to read. Many writers and newspapers are banned, and "un-German" books are burned.

Only one type of youth group is allowed: the Hitler Youth (Hitlerjugend). It teaches young Germans obedience and military discipline. Boys are raised to be soldiers and girls to be mothers.

Many fun activities are organized outside of school, like hiking, skiing, music and parties at the beach. Jews and other "inferior" youth cannot participate.

In November 1938, the first mass arrests of Jews takes place during Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. Scores of synagogues and thousands of Jewish shops go up in flames.

Black children are taken from their homes and sterilized. They will never have children.
