Panel 4: The Nazis Recruit

Adolf Hitler searches for new recruits in the 1920's. The Nazis focus on the slums of Germany where there is high unemployment and little hope for the future. Hitler tells people to be proud of being German, that they are a superior race and that they need to fight for their future. He hopes that their desire for revenge will lead them to follow him uncritically.

The Nazis empower these men by giving them uniforms and weapons, a purpose and a new identity. They are called the SA. People everywhere are impressed with how Hitler has managed to provide even criminals with discipline and purpose.

Many others, however, feel that the Nazis threaten Democracy and human rights.

A young Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels pose with local Nazis in 1926. Hitler is the leader of the Nazis. Goebbels later becomes the Nazi Propaganda Minister.

Despite the hardship, music and culture thrive in Berlin and Hamburg, attracting young people from around the world. The Nazis see these modern art forms as signs of a sick and immoral society.

In 1928 Adolf Hitler tries to become the leader of Germany during the elections, but only receives 3.2% of the votes.
